Deepawali, the most sacred, revered and widely celebrated festival of Sanatan Dharma, not just in India but in many other countries as well. The darkest night of lunisolar calendar, Amavasya of Kartik month is celebrated as the festival of lights, the festival of victory of good over evil, light over darkness. A festival of raising awareness, gaining knowledge and eradication of ignorance, a festival of illumination, not just in the home but in our mind as well. Usually, Deepawali is celebrated for five days, starting with Dhanteras, then Narak Chaturdashi, then Deepawali, then Annakut and Govardhan Puja, and then Bhai Dooj on the fifth day.
Various people celebrate Deepawali in their own different way, but mostly Lakshmi puja is done on this day. Deepawali is also celebrated to celebrate the day when Shri Ram came back to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile. There can be numerous ways and reason to celebrate this festival, but the goal is always same, to bring divinity within ourselves, to be pure from the inside, to do good deeds, and to care for those who need us.
Many times people enquire how to celebrate Deepawali. Well, the first rule is to be clean from not just outside, but inside as well. Clean your surroundings, try to spread happiness, donate to those who are in need, clear your conscience, learn the difference between right and wrong. God sees intention, so purity, reverence and obeisance are not optional, but paramount. Clean and decorate your home with flowers, lights, creative rangoli, and in any way your imagination allows. You would want to evoke and welcome The Goddess in a clean home.
Lakshmi Pujan:
