The 11th lunar day of Jyestha month when the sun transits in Taurus sign is celebrated as waterless fast in terms of Nirjala Ekadashi or Bhimseni Ekadashi. The 2nd June of the year 2020 is the day of waterless fast from the sunrise of Ekadashi tithi to the sunrise of Dwadashi tithi.

The reason behind Waterless fast

The heat is at its peak but faith in Lord Vishnu is insuppressible and it’s this faith that makes devotees stay without water whole day and night long. The one who keeps this tough fast is saved from going to hell. The fast is rigid but this one fast provides the benefit of all 24-Ekadashi fasts. The Lord Vishu himself has mentioned that one who keeps this rigid fast is granted exemption from sinful deeds and reaps the benefit of all Ekadashi fasting.

Rituals to be followed

The day of Ekadashi fast starts with bath in some sacred river or with ganga jal mixed with normal water then proceeds with the prayer of Lord Vishnu, offering him yellow colour clothes, fruits and sweets and then donating the same to some Brahman. Reciting of Vishnu sahastranam and Ekadashi Vrath Katha on this day is considered very auspicious.

Spiritual Reason

The fast kept on this day burns all the sins into ashes, it also generates the blessing of Lord Vishnu and if it is added with some kind charity to some Brahmin then the person becomes liberated from the birth, rebirth and death cycle and after his life ends goes to the abode of Lord Vishu and till he is alive he reaps the benefit of sound health. It is believed that the people on keep this tough fast rides on the celestial aeroplane, the vimana, to reach the Lord’s abode.

Scientific reason

We are in the era where we eat a lot of toxic food but the waterless fast of Nirjala Ekadashi cleans and detoxifies our body and gives energy to the vital organs. The digestive system when at rest cleans the gastro-intestinal tract.

The Nirjala Ekadashi day is the orbital path combination of Sun, Moon and earth. The tidal waves on this day are high and rough but become calm from next day onwards. The fact is that it takes 3–4 days for the food to reach our brain. So, when there is less input of food to the brain there are less chances of imbalance.

The atmospheric pressure is the lowest on Ekadashi days in comparison to other days of the month. This is a scientific fact and another reason for fasting on Ekadashi and cleanses your bowels and body. Other days of the lunar cycle are normal/high-pressure days, hence might affect adversely if we fast on those days. If you keep fast on Ekadashi, it is advisable to wake up early and eat on the next day.
