Protect Yourself by Protecting Nature
Nature is what keeps us alive, giving us food and oxygen to breathe and in return, we are busy in mindless exploitation of natural resources, so much so that humanity is on the verge of extinction. What are we thinking? There is another planet for us? Someone would descend from above and fix everything? Some magic that will correct everything? To an extent, nature does correct itself, but at what cost?
We, the humans are not special species for nature, if to improve the conditions, nature has to kill humans, it would do so and it will be our loss, but nature will flourish again. Do we want it? Certainly not! What can we do? Together our collective effort will bring a positive change. We can preserve nature in our daily life. Let us see how;
• Reduce, reuse, recycle- Reduce the waste you throw. Prefer things that can be reused instead of disposable things. Recycle. Share your books and toys with your juniors. Repair electronic items instead of throwing them away and buying a new one.
• Don’t use plastic. At least reduce its use. Keep a cloth bag in your vehicle. Carry your water bottle instead of buying disposable. Make sure not to use disposable straws and cutlery.
• Conserve water, because water is life. The water level is going down every second, even while you are reading these words. Close tap when you are brushing or shaving. Fix leaking taps.
• Walk for better health. Use a bicycle. Use public transport as much as practical. Share rides.
• You can make compost from the garbage you generate. It’s a good fertilizer.
• Go back to roots. Eat Indian way by sitting on the floor. Not only it’ll improve your health but also it’ll save many trees from being cut down for your dining table.
• When you take a dip in the river, make sure not to pollute it by soap. Don’t wash your clothes in water.
• Educate yourself and share your knowledge with others on how to save the environment, nature and earth. Be very vocal about this cause. Educate your family, friends and neighbors.
• Use energy- efficient bulbs and tubes. Switch it off unnecessary appliances and when you are not using it.
• Plant trees. Many trees. As many as you can. It is the best way to save nature and earth. Trees are the elixir for the earth.
• Use natural products more to reduce the flow of toxic chemicals into our water bodies.
• Use less paper. Do not print what is not necessary. Print on both sides. Reuse paper is possible.
• Go vegetarian. Meat requires more water and natural resources than vegetarian food. Red meat produces up to 40 times more greenhouse emission than vegetables.
• Go local. Buy from farmers and small shops. Big corporations do not care for the environment.
• Always throw trash in a garbage can. Trash left scattered can harm animals and pollute water bodies.
• If your favorite restaurant or food joint uses plastic, talk to management to reduce the use of plastic. Realise your immense power as a consumer.
• Don’t waste food. Take only what you can eat. Small saving will yield big results.
• Buy big packing of non-perishable items. One big packet uses less plastic than several small packets.
• Reduce your carbon footprint. Be responsible human being.
We are the first generation to realise that we are killing nature and the last generation who can do anything about it. You are responsible for both, the destruction and the saving. Make a diary to write down things that you have done to save nature and share it on your social media.
