Things to do on Makar Sankranti/Uttarayan

Makar Sankranti is one of the most auspicious day in year to earn good merit. During the war of Mahabharta, Bhishma Pitamah waited for this day so that he can end his journey on earth. He has a boon to end his life according to will and he choose this day due to its immense auspiciousness.

Timings for Makar Sankranti In 2020 –

Punyakaal – 06:50 am to 6:01 Pm.

Maha Punya Kaal – 06:50 am to 8:41 am.

Some important things you must do on Sankranti:

1.Donation

Donate things related to Saturn such as. til and oil. You can also donate silver and gold items. Donation of items such as fruits, steel utensils, rice,jaggery and pulses is also auspicious.

2. Take holy dips in rivers.

In our Vedic culture, taking dips in river at important occasions is said to be beneficial. It makes us free from sins and ward off various negative influences.

3. As this day is primarily meant to honor Sun God, chant Aditya Hrudayam strotam.

4. You can also listen to Surya mandala strotam given by Lord Krishna to Arjuna.

5. You can chant and meditate on surya mool mantra- ॐ घृणिम सूर्याय नमः Om Ghrinim Suryaay Namah.

6. As sun is transiting saturn’s sign,you should take blessings from fatherly figures.

7. As makar Sankranti falls on Wednesday, you can also listen to Vishnu Sahasranama.

8. Donations and prayers done during punya kaal and maha punya kaal is especially auspicious.
