Deepawali Is The Festival of Light and Prosperity: A Note on Lakshmi Pujan Day Deepawali, the festival of lights, is one of the most celebrated Hindu festivals worldwide. It is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. The festival falls on Amavasya Tithi (new moon day) of Kartik month. There is often confusion about the exact date of Deepawali. To determine the correct date, it’s essential to consult religious texts like Dharmasindhu, Nirnaya Sindhu, Tithi Nirnay, and Purusharth Chintamani. According to these texts, Mahalaxmi Puja should be performed in Pradosh Vyapini, a specific time period during the evening. The exact timing of Pradosh Vyapini varies each year and can be calculated using planetary movement. To ensure accurate observance of Deepawali and Mahalaxmi Puja in 2024, let us understand when Amavasya will start and when it will end:

𝗔𝗺𝗮𝘃𝗮𝘀𝘆𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘀: 𝗧𝗵𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝟯𝟭-𝟭𝟬-𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰, 𝟬𝟯:𝟱𝟯 𝗣𝗠

𝗔𝗺𝗮𝘃𝗮𝘀𝘆𝗮 𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀: 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝟬𝟭-𝟭𝟭-𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰, 𝟬𝟲:𝟭𝟳 𝗣𝗠

𝗜𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰, 𝗮 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗰𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲: Amavasya (new moon day) falls on both October 31st and November 1st. It means that the entire day of October 31st and the first part of November 1st will be considered Amavasya. However, for the specific purpose of Deepawali celebrations, the timing of Pradosh Kaal (a favorable time for worship) is crucial. Pradosh Kaal typically occurs during the evening and is calculated based on the position of the moon and stars. In this particular year, Pradosh Kaal falls after sunset on November 1st.

According to traditional Hindu practices, when Pradosh Kaal falls on both days of Amavasya, Deepawali should be celebrated on the second day, which is November 1st in this case. It ensures that both Pitru Pujan (ancestral worship) and Mahalaxmi Puja can be performed according to the prescribed guidelines. Pitru Pujan is typically done during the afternoon, while Mahalaxmi Puja is performed during Pradosh Kaal. By celebrating Deepawali on November 1st, you can effectively observe both rituals without any conflicts in timing. Based on a careful analysis of various religious texts, it’s clear that Deepawali should be celebrated on November 1st, 2024. This conclusion is supported by the following factors: Amavasya Tithi falls both on 31st October and 1st November.

Timing of Pradosh Kaal: Pradosh Kaal, the auspicious time for Lakshmi Pujan worship, falls on November 1st.

Amavasya Duration: Amavasya will be present for at least 24 minutes on November 1st.

Scriptural Guidelines: According to religious texts like Nirnay Sindhu and Dharmasindhu, Mahalaxmi Puja should be performed on the day when Amavasya and Pradosh Kaal coincide. Therefore, it is recommended that all Hindus celebrate Deepawali and perform Mahalaxmi Puja on November 1st, 2024, to adhere to the traditional guidelines and ensure a spiritually fulfilling experience.
