Why is Shraddh Paksh (Mahalaya) not considered auspicious to start something new?

Shouldn’t these Shraddh days be auspicious because our ancestors are here to bless us during this time? Let us understand.

  1. Shraddh Days are to ensure we focus more on seva, remembrance and gratitude to our ancestors. Beginning something new usually involves excitement and focus towards that one thing which can drive us from the purpose.

2. During the Shraddh paksha our ancestors come to visit and bless us & during this time we offer tarpanam to our ancestors.

It’s more like we are paying them our respect during these 15 days and so we mustn’t divert our attention to other activities.

3. There is nothing like inauspicious, but the focus has to be on ‘Pitru Tarpan’ as it’s purely Pitru Paksh..there we have to think about their Moksha and seek there blessings….so the focus doesn’t get shift to something new.

4. The Pitru Paksha is tinged with the ancestor’s deepest thoughts, which include Sad emotion. Think of our favourite ancestor’s negative (Sad) emotion? It may be jealousy/anger etc. I saw descendants resonate to that 10 times more.

5. Since yugas, Universe has a system where Pitrus come to receive whatever is given to them in a particular time. I have a hunch why that time was chosen but am still researching it. That space exists in a part of the Universe as well as within us. It is occupied/possessed.

6. Then of course in many families, some person has died unnaturally or in some other way whereby they are now what is considered either bhoota or preta or something else. This paksha tinged with so many things. They can’t escape the yoni easily..

7. When we are doing offerings to Manes, we cannot do auspicious activities at the same time. Moreover, some of them are even pretas which is negative in every sense. So though they are relatives, there is nothing auspicious during this time.

8. In Astrology, this dosha can be seen in prashna even when last rites are performed. This happens because such doshas include many ancestors. The appeasement is required before anything. Even saints who suffer from dosha have to remove it to reach next stage.

9. You will see that rice served is plain rice. Jaggery and ghee is used only for devthas. In North where traditions is distort some people serve rice with jaggery and ghee harming the process itself. They are separate from devthas and belong to lowly but powerful dimension.
